400 British MPs, Peers call for a firm policy on Iran

British Parliamentary Committee for Iran Freedom

British Parliamentary Committee for Iran Freedom

A panel of experts on Iran affairs together with parliamentarians from both Houses of Parliament and each major political party discussed UK policy toward Iran on Thursday, June 30 during a conference in the House of Commons.
The parliamentarians expressed concern over recent increases in the number of executions in Iran and the use of barbaric punishments such as flogging and amputations by Iranian authorities.
They called attention to the deteriorating human rights situation in the country since last year's nuclear deal, including arbitrary arrest of youths, women, activists, human rights defenders, dissidents and dual citizens. These arrests have often been justified under bogus charges like undermining “national security” or “Mohareb (enmity towards God)“.
Speakers pointed out that the intensified crackdown on civil society, as tragic and appalling as it is, is a sign of weakening of the theocratic regime. They suggested that it indicates the regime has no other answer to the legitimate democratic aspiration of the Iranian people or the increasing levels of popular dissent.

A group of prominent American figures, Republican and Democrat, are planning to make their way to Paris next weekend for what has become an annual show of strength for a major movement dedicated to the downfall of the regime in Tehran.

On July 9, the National Council of Resistance of Iran ( NCRI )/People’s Mujahedeen Organization of Iran (MEK) plans a mass “Free Iran” rally in the French capital, following a series of round-table events a day earlier. Last year’s event attracted a reported 100,000 Iranian expatriates and supporters.

Illustration on Iran’s empty condemnation of terrorism by Alexander Hunter

- About two days after an Orlando gunman carried out the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, the Iranian foreign ministry issued a statement purporting to decry the incident. Speaking via the state-run IRNA, a spokesperson said the Iranian regime “condemns” the attack “based on its principled policy of condemning terrorism and its strong will to seriously confront this evil phenomenon.”

It’s hard to imagine an expression of sympathy more disingenuous. Tehran’s comments must be viewed against a backdrop of its status as the world’s most active state sponsor of terrorism, its steady propaganda against the United States, and its own brand of homophobia that has its origins in Islamic extremism.

The Human Rights Council on Monday held a general debate on the Universal Periodic Review.

In the general debate, speakers underlined that the Universal Periodic Review should be conducted in an objective, non-biased, constructive, non-confrontational and non-politicized manner.  They all stressed that the implementation of recommendations was the key challenge of the Universal Periodic Review process, noting that some sort of monitoring for the implementation should be set up at the national level.

The Guardian, 25 June 2016 - The husband of a British-Iranian woman who has been detained without charge in Tehran for 83 days has spoken of his anger over the Foreign Office’s handling of the matter.
Richard Ratcliffe told the Guardian he felt trade relations had been prioritized over the welfare of his wife, Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, and their two-year-old daughter Gabriella. “I don’t think Nazanin and Gabriella’s case, nor any of the others, is a top priority at the moment,” he said, referring to four other British passport holders he understands are being detained in Iran. “The top priority of the Foreign Office is trade.”
Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who works for the Thomson Reuters Foundation as a project manager, was arrested at Tehran’s international airport by members of the country’s Revolutionary Guard on 3 April. She had been about to return to the UK from a family visit in her home country. This month the Revolutionary Guard released a statement accusing her of fomenting a “soft overthrow” of the Islamic Republic, which her husband described as “farcical”.
