Iranian political prisoners demand the world's attention

Moezzi has faced repression from the Islamic Republic since its earliest days. He spent years in prison in the 1980's for his affiliation with the Iranian opposition group, the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (PMOI/MEK).

He served two more years, beginning in 2008, for having visited his two daughters residing in Camp Ashraf, Iraq. He has arrested again in 2011, seven months after his latest release, because he had attended the funeral of a fellow political prisoner, another MEK activist who had died because authorities denied him access to life-saving medical treatment.
Over the course of Moezzi’s long history as a prisoner of conscience, he has faced many different forms of pressure, including the arbitrary and unlawful extension of his most recent prison term beyond its specified four years.


This presents a challenge because it is more difficult to rally people around a cause that they cannot see with their own eyes. These atrocities must not be allowed to continue in the shadows.

This is the challenge that must be overcome; it simply requires serious commitment, and a broad-based campaign that encompasses much more of the international community and media. World powers must take an interest in this case, and in the overall plight of Iranian prisoners of conscience.

This imperative is actually underscored by the recent successes of Iran’s domestic activists, particularly in the Sadeghi case.
If the global community remains silent, it is sending the clear message to the Iranian regime that it can get away with such crimes with impunity. That is a message we must not condone with our silence.

Influential former Iranian regime president, Hashemi Rafsanjani died at age 82

In 2013, Iran's election watchdog rejected his nomination for the presidential campaign, hinting at his age.
In 2015, a court sentenced his younger son, Mahdi, to a 10-year prison term over embezzlement and security charges.
Rafsanjani is survived by his wife, Effat Marashi, and five children.

TEHRAN, Iran, Jan. 8, 2017 — Former Iranian President Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, a wily political survivor and multimillionaire mogul who remained among the ruling elite, died Sunday, state TV reported. He was 82.
Iranian media reported earlier Sunday that he was taken to a hospital north of Tehran because of a heart condition. State television broke into programming to announce his death.
Rafsanjani's mix of sly wit and reputation for cunning moves — both in politics and business — earned him a host of nicknames such as Akbar Shah during a life that touched every major event in Iranian affairs since before the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

While Rafsanjani was blocked from the 2013 ballot by Iran's election overseers — presumably worried about boosting his already wide-ranging influence — the former leader embraced Rouhani's success.
'Now I can easily die since people are able to decide their fate by themselves,' he reportedly said last March.
However, Rouhani now faces a crucial presidential election in May which will serve as a referendum on the deal and thawing relations with the West.
Rafsanjani was sharply critical of a move by Iran's constitutional watchdog to block Hassan Khomeini, the grandson of the Islamic Republic's founder, from running for a top clerical body in elections last year.
Rafsanjani was a close aide of Khomeini and served as president from 1989 to 1997 during a period of significant changes in Iran.

International human rights organizations, especially the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Iran called for urgent action.

Media Express, January 6, 2017 - In Iran on Wednesday, January 4th, 2017, Ali Moezzi was transferred from Gohardasht prison to an unknown location. This political prisoner is feared to be in danger and the Iranian Resistance has called on all international human rights organizations, especially the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and Special Rapporteur for the Human Rights Situation in Iran to take urgent action.


Ali Moezzi is a political prisoner who is suffering from cancer and has been prevented from receiving treatment, according to his family. Moezzi is a supporter of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI) and spent time in prison during the 1980s. He is also the father of two PMOI members. He was last arrested in 2011. Moezzi was then sentenced to an additional year in prison in December 2015, despite the fact that his term had already been finalized.


The Iranian regime is known for forging new judicial cases against political prisoners once their sentences come to an end. This tactic is used to refrain from releasing these political prisoners back into the Iranian population, where they may continue their activities of speaking out against the regime.
Another political prisoner, Saleh Kohandel, is on the verge of being released, but was transferred to the Ministry of Intelligence ward. Authorities have threatened to not release him, but if he is released, he will not be allowed in public and will be arrested if he fails to abide by those conditions.

with the participation of Russia, Turkey and Iran came to a
significant end.

 With mainstream media emphasizing how the US
administration was completely sidelined in talks that discussed
the future of Syria, a different perspective also sheds light on
how Iran was sidelined to an unprecedented degree.

 Considering
that this session ended with a document signed by all three
parties, one can take a hard look at the results.

This document emphasizes Syria’s independence and territorial
integrity as a multiracial, multi-religious, non-sectarian,
democratic and secular state; underscores the necessity of
reaching a political solution; welcomes joint efforts in East
Aleppo to evacuate civilians and armed rebels;

 highlights the
need to expand a ceasefire across the country and facilitate
access to humanitarian aid; supports a possible agreement
between the Syrian opposition and the Syrian government; and
accentuates continuing joint efforts against terrorism and
especially ISIS, differentiating their forces from those of the
armed democratic opposition.

If Obama’s policies were to continue, it will be difficult for the Syrian opposition to survive Assad’s brutality.

 If Assad were deprived of foreign support, the opposition can recover and thrive. It earns legitimacy from patient suffering of its supporters. But its prospects would brighten if Iranian fighters were to be pressed by Russia and America to depart.

 The Media Express, January 3, 2017 - Several reports of execution without due process, public hangings, arbitrary killings, and death sentencing have emerged from Iran this week.

The week also saw the extensive use of cruel and unusual punishments on citizens. A famous TV and film actor was subject to 90 lashes and a yearlong ban on acting for charges of sexual infidelity, said Fars, a state-run news agency.

A public flogging also took place in the city of Iranshahr, after an announcement by the United Nations made explicit the fact that public floggings are inhumane, humiliating and illegal before international law.
